The Eyes of All Wait for Thee

The Eyes of All Wait for Thee (Anthem for SATB Chorus, a cappella) was composed in November 2023 and is dedicated to Rupert Gough and the Choir of Royal Holloway, University of London. Rupert Gough has been the Choir’s Director since 2005.

It has been my good fortune for the Choir of Royal Holloway, directed by Rupert Gough, to not only have performed my choral music live, but also for them to have done two commercial recordings of it for the Convivium label (2022 and 2024 releases). It is for this latter recording that, with gratitude, my The Eyes of All Wait for Thee was composed for them.

The Eyes of All Wait for Thee is a setting of the well-known and beloved verses 15-20 from Psalm 145 – a Psalm of David. These words, offering both comfort and praise, have appeared in a number of different biblical translations over the years. I have chosen to set the one from the 1901 edition of the American Standard Version of The Bible.

The eyes of all wait for thee; And thou givest them their food in due season.
Thou openest thy hand, And satisfiest the desire of every living thing.
Jehovah is righteous in all his ways, And gracious in all his works.
Jehovah is nigh unto all them that call upon him, To all that call upon him in truth.
He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him; He also will hear their cry and will save them.
Jehovah preserveth all them that love him;
